1964: Tar at the bench as a
jeweler's apprentice for
Kirchner Jewlers in Minneapolis.
2004: Tar at the bench setting
diamonds for his own business,
GoldSmith Jewelers.
Terry "Tar" Smith has been setting diamonds for 40 years. Figuring an average of setting five carats total weight of diamonds per day, it is estimated that he has set over 52 thousand carats of diamonds. That's over 1,300 carats of diamonds set in one year. He has certainly earned the title of Master Jeweler/Master Diamond Setter.

In addition to setting diamonds for local customers, Tar sets diamonds for fine jewelry stores throughout the five-state area. More than 30 jewelers send their diamonds to him for setting. He is also a master at brite cutting, pave setting, and setting large, impressive 7-carat single diamonds. When you realize that some of the diamonds set by Tar are smaller than the point of a pencil, you can appreciate the amazing total of diamonds he has set over the last 40 years. He truly is an expert.
